I’ve been messing with websites for quite some time now; the vast majority of that time as someone who was more than willing to pay money for the honour of having a space to call my own online. Then a few years ago I discovered that you could actually earn money online to offset the costs of your web hosting and domains names, if not actually make a couple of dollars above and beyond that; that discovery just about rocked my world – and I’ve been on the road to internet respectability ever since.
So what is respectability? Let me put it this way; one one side you have the hobby – a drain to your pocket book for your own self-satisfaction. One the far other side you have profitability, the core component of running a successful business and right smack dab in the middle you have respectability. Respectability means that while you may not be bringing in gobs of profit, at least you know enough to be able to break even with what you know. Respectability is generally the first goal for anyone starting up a business – that magical time where you crawl out of the red just before you transition (hopefully) into the black.
I’ve been trying to get to respectability for close to three years now; and while I’ve been earning money I haven’t actually seen a penny of it since I’ve earned it only from Adsense and I haven’t reached their $100 minimum payout quota yet. This is sort of like wandering around in purgatory – you’re making headway but it seems like it’ll be eons before you get to that light at the end of the tunnel. Adsense is like that if you don’t have huge amounts of traffic or happen to be in a niche that just doesn’t happen to pay well; the one I chose seems to suffer from the later especially.
So what’s a would-be internet marketer to do? My average click is in the neigbourhood of 25 cents, so that’s a hell of a lot of traffic to get to my modest goal (that I’m too embarrassed to even mention here). I have attempted to spread out my Adsense earnings onto other sites with some limited results…but nothing much to write home about. So I decided to finally leave Adsense alone for a while and try another form of monetization; affiliate marketing.
Yes, affiliate marketing – it has a bit of a bad rap to it outside internet marketing circles, but it is a pretty cool way to make money. The great thing about it is that there are many products to peddle online, which is also a downside – which one to choose? I finally decided to stop guessing and use a reputable online site to just ‘tell me’ which products I should start promoting. I had heard the advice several times but kept thinking “that won’t work for MY niche” without really putting it into place. Well, after getting sick and tired of my glacier-style rise to respectability, I figured I was willing to test out affiliate marketing yet again.
How would I do it? Well, first of all I’d use this certain site to tell me what people are after – that takes the guesswork out of the equation at least. Then, I do some research to see how much competition there is and if there’s a snowballs chance in Hades that I can actually rank for the main keyword. If I have green lights on those criteria, I would target the keyword on my blog and start building up relevant links using the keyword in the anchor text. I did two article submissions, a 5 minute video on Youtube and I was on Google’s first page for my main keyword and a related one. I was up on the first page within a day or so, and that was without the Youtube or second article submission. For a short time I occupied the #3 spot on Google for my main keyword, but dropped down a day or so later; to stabilize this I know I’ll need more quality links – so I’m still waiting for my second article to be approved, I created a second video that’s on Youtube now, plus I bookmarked my first Youtube video with Delicious.
Sound like a lot of work? It doesn’t seem as bad as it sounds partly because I’m seeing direct results from my actions – not to mention some incidental affiliate clicks. It appears that in one short day I earned enough to cover my online expenses for a month, so I’m happy with the results and looking to see if I can build on it from there.
Is this a real system? The only way to know is to ‘rinse and repeat’ as they say. I’ll need to continue to pick new keywords and follow the same system and see if I can duplicate the results. I’m fairly confident that I can get to respectability and beyond with this plan. Hopefully it will stabilize enough so that I can use the income to ‘grease the skids’ a little and invest into some tools to help ramp things up.
I’ll update as things stabilize over time. Respectability – here I come.
